Jeremy Vess In an industry that progressively glorifies vain pursuits of happiness through indulgence, promiscuity, and materialism, singer-songwriter Jeremy Vess isn’t afraid to be different. With his acoustic-driven folk-rock base, catchy melodies, and poetic lyrics, Vess stands apart from many artists who are in it for the fame and fortune. With central themes ranging from love, to heartache, from addiction, and loneliness, and tragedy, to faith and hope, he believes that music is merely a platform to reach people with a message. His message? There is more to life than merely “the pursuit of happiness”. Maybe the lyrics from Vess’ song “The Answer” say it best… “If you wanna find yourself, you better lose yourself. You’ll find it all in the end.” From an early age, Vess lived out this mantra, constantly searching for knowledge and wisdom where most teenagers don’t think to look – God. Growing up a pastor’s kid in the outer banks of North Carolina, Vess wasn’t your typical trouble making, rule breaking “PK”. Instead of partying and pursuing popularity by fitting in with the crowd, he focused his energy on standing out, being different, and pursuing a relationship with Jesus Christ. He gave his life over to God, and in the process found himself, and his music. Ironically, in leaving behind his dreams of playing music, God began giving him those dreams back. He formed a band with his younger brother, Justin, and two childhood friends. Eventually, drummer Mike Gilbert (of Cottonwood, AZ) joined the Vess boys, as well as local bassist Donnie Canup. Vess, enjoying many musical styles, found comfort in staying true to his acoustic roots and folk-rock lyrical style. Now his message is clearer than ever, although it might not come as some expect. Being a Christian and a musician, he doesn’t pigeon-hole himself to playing “Christian music”. Being comfortable performing anywhere from a smoky bar to a reverent church service, Vess tries not to be tied down by tradition or narrow expectations of others. Vess understands that the message of the gospel is for everyone and he is prepared to take it anywhere it needs to go. |
